Decisions, Decisions, Decisions.... - Tuesday, February 28, 2006

Oh the pain of trying to make life decisions for your children. Today I had an appointment with the Spanish Immersion Magnet School here in our area. I was very impressed with their program. I won't go into all this boring detail or anything, but I thought it was great. The only problem I have with magnet schools are they are in very poor/under privileged neighborhoods. The classrooms were pretty diverse though. It isn't the neighborhood children that go to the magnet schools, the kids are bused in from other areas. But if the school is located in such a neighborhood, they get more funding from the state. No biggie I guess.

It was amazing to see the Kindergartners at the school speaking perfect Spanish. I think it would be a great asset for Skyler to be bi-lingual. Imagine the doors it could open up for her when she is older.

The whole thing is freaking my mother out. She doesn't think I should send Skyler to a school where they only speak Spanish. They don't even teach the children to read or write in English until they are in 2nd grade. One thing you must agree to is to read every night to your child in English. Because the kids spean Spanish 6 to 7 hours a day, they begin to think and even dream in Spanish. Not that they are going to forget how to speak English or anything. But it is freaking my mom out. But the good thing is, Skyler isn't her kid, so she doesn't really get an opinion anyway.

We have an appointment with one other Magnet school this Friday. As I mentioned before, this is the performing arts school. But I try and think of it this way, would Skyler be a better child/adult learning piano and drama or to learn a second language?

Work has just been exhausting. I don't know how much longer I can keep up the pace I have been keeping. I want to do a good job, but do you ever get to the point where you have so much to do that you just think you aren't doing anything well? That's kind of where I'm at right now.

I guess we all get frustrated with our jobs. No one has the "perfect" job or anything. And there is always jealousy, cattiness, etc. that goes on in an office. Any time you get a bunch of women together day in and day out, there is always going to be trouble. Why is it men don't seem to be as bad as women when it comes to getting along?

Tonight I am planning on attending another MOPS meeting. I had such a great time at the last one. I highly recommend the MOPS groups for any mother of a pre-schooler.

I really promised myself that I would try to get back into writing in this journal and reading all the journals I enjoy so much. But sometimes you just don't really have a whole lot to say. Nothing exciting has been going on in our lives here these past few weeks. I know we are just anxious for winter to be over. It's actually pretty nice out today, but I'm so tired I don't even feel like taking the kids outside. And the bad thing is I only worked like 5 hours today since I had the appointment at the magnet school. Sometimes I wonder if I don't have something wrong with me because I am so tired all the time.

Anyway, I think I will spend the next hour or so getting caught up on some of your journals. I really don't have much else to talk about today. Until next time.....

I'm Back! - Monday, February 20, 2006

I told you I sucked at updating. Oh the pain of not having enough time to even go to the restroom alone in the house. I'm sure most of you working mothers know where I'm coming from.

Anyway, a bit about the cruise. As expected, it pretty much sucked. I know, I shouldn't complain. After all, I was off an entire week from work and I was on a cruise. But hello, the ship was ancient, and I mean A-N-C-I-E-N-T. If I had taken that as my first cruise, I probably would have never cruised again. After being on the big superliners with all the new stuff and then going back to the ancient Celebration... Well it just plain ole sucked. I know your probably thinking I'm such a princess for thinking that.

Let's just count the ways why this cruise sucked...

1. The boat was so old and so not taken care of. I truly hope Carnival is retiring her VERY soon.

2. Two major meltdowns by the real "Princess." I'm talking knock down, drag out, make a scene, carry her screaming down the hall kind of meltdown. Oh the horror and embaressment of having an unruly child.

3. The grandmother. Love her soul, I didn't realize she was in as bad of shape as she is. I mean we see her quite often, but it's only at her house where she walks from the kitchen to the chair and back. Bless her heart she could barely walk to the dining room without getting out of breath and passing out. And she did practically pass out getting on and off the boat. We begged, pleaded, begged some more to get her a wheelchair, but she refused. She did finally let someone take her from the ship to the car in a golf cart at the end of the cruise. Also she wasn't able to get off the ship in any of the ports because she couldn't walk very much. And once again, absolutely REFUSED a wheelchair.

4. It was colder than crap. And I mean cold! It was 60 degrees in Key West and 65 in Bahamas. I know that doesn't sound cold to most people, but trust me, it was cold for those places. How cold was it you ask? Well it was so cold in the Bahamas that the natives were wearing big winter coats and ski masks! Pretty funny to see us stupid Americans in our swimsuits at the beach. I know they thought we were crazy. But you can't go to the Bahamas without at least attempting to get a tan!

I've updated the ole Flickr account with some of the photos from the cruise. You can find them here.

Skyler really enjoyed the cruise. I think the thing she liked best was dressing up in her party dress and wearing her "heels." She thought she was hot stuff! I even had her "pigs" done in a French pedicure before we left. She really enjoyed that. It was only like $3.00 to have them painted. It was so worth it. She sat back in the chair while the lady worked on her and just acted like she had been doing it all her life.

Well I actually started this post like two weeks ago. But things have just been so crazy around this house that I haven't even had time to think about my blog, or anyone else's for that matter. I am so behind in reading my favorite blogs. Even on the weekends we are all just running around like chickens with our heads cut off trying to get things done around this house. And the bad thing is, the place still looks like a train ran through it. Oh well, I give up.

This morning was my morning to sleep in. The kids didn't get up until about 7:50 a.m. That's not fair! Yesterday when it was Jonathan's morning to sleep in they were up at 6:30 a.m. He is always the lucky one. Anyway, I stayed in bed until about 9:00 a.m. I was awake the whole time, but it was just nice to lie in bed that extra hour doing absolutely nothing. Jonathan fed the kids and was watching videos with them on the digital cable.

Skyler has become obsessed with this one song. It's "She's Beautiful" by James Blunt. I bet we have played that video like 50 times in the last two days. She knows every word of the song by heart. I actually really like the song myself. But after you've heard it 50 times in a two day period, well I'm pretty much burnt out on it at the moment.

Yesterday we also took the kids out and went to the Magnet School Fair. I am thinking about putting Skyler into a Magnet School for elementary. The one I have chosen is a performing arts school. It's an "open school" meaning that there aren't specific grades. They kind of mix the kids all together. They learn dance, violin, piano, drama, performing arts, etc. I think it would be right up Skyler's alley. She is so into music. My second choice is a Spanish Immersion school. They start from the very beginning only speaking Spanish to the children. All of their lessons are taught in Spanish. They are able to understand Spanish by the first semester of Kindergarten. And by the time they are in 5th grade, they can speak, read and write fluent Spanish. What a bonus it would be if Skyler were bilingual. Of course the performing arts school is my first choice, but if she doesn't get in that one, the Spanish immersion school would be great to.

Today we are just picking up around the house and watching some movies we received from Netflix. Well actually we watched them all weekend. Each one was pretty good.

1. Domino - I really liked this movie. It was a wee bit violent, but I thought it was pretty good. The only complaint I had was the way the movie was filmed. It's really jumpy, weird lighting and too many flashes from one scene to another. If they had filmed it differently, I would have liked it much better. You'll understand what I'm talking about if you ever watch it.

2. Million Dollar Baby - We had been waiting forever to see this movie. I will say this is an excellent movie. We really weren't expecting the ending though. I won't ruin it for you if you haven't seen the movie, but it was just really unexpected. I think Hillary Swank is a brilliant actress and, of course, Clint Eastwood is just the bomb.

3. Four Brothers - I'm not actually watching this movie. Jonathan is laying on the couch watching it as I'm writing this entry. Basically the only time we have any free time is if one or both of the kids are taking a nap or after they have gone to bed. So I'm spending my free time writing this entry instead.

Today we have gathered up all of the baby stuff and cleaned it up in preparation for taking it to the consignment shop. I can't believe my babies aren't babies anymore. We have one of those really cool aquarium swings an exersaucer, and a Sesame Street highchair that was Skyler's. Chase has a new highchair, so this one was just sitting around in our storage shed. I know we will never get around to having a yard sale, so at least by taking it to the consignment shop we will get a little money out of it. Chase needs summer clothes, so I'll just take the money and turn around and spend it there on summer clothes for him. Skyler is pretty much stocked up for summer clothes. All of her stuff from last year still fits her this year.

So anyway, I guess I have jabbered on enough for now. I promise to get caught up with everyone's blogs. Hope to hear from some of you guys real soon!
